Ram Vilas Paswan: News
Ram Vilas Paswan was a senior political leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and a former Union Minister from Bihar. He was a prominent Dalit leader and is credited with bringing the backward castes into the political mainstream. In 1969, Paswan started out as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on the ticket of the Samyukta Socialist Party. In the 1970s, he joined the JP movement and opposed the Emergency (1975-77), during which he was arrested. After stints in the Janata Party and Janata Dal, he founded his own political party, LJP, in 2000. Paswan had great political foresight, aligning with parties who had favorable prospects for forming the next government. He served as a Union Minister consecutively in the National Front (1989-90), United Front (1996-98), Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1998-2004), UPA-I (2004-09), and the Narendra Modi (2014 onwards) governments. Paswan was elected to the Lok Sabha nine times in 1977, 1980, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2014. He was a Rajya Sabha MP from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2019 till his demise in 2020.
